On September 18, 2009 a dark comedy thriller film, The Informant!, starring Scott Bakula, Matt Damon, Melanie Lynskey, and Joel McHale, is released in USA. The Informant! directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13) and based on the 2000 non fiction Kurt Eichenwald’s book The Informant.

The Informant! is about Ivy League Ph.D. Mark Whitacre (Matt Damon), a rising star at Decatur, Illinois based Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) in the early 1990s who wound up blowing the whistle on the company’s price-fixing tactics.

One night in early November 1992, one of the high-ranking ADM executives told FBI agent Brian Shepard (Scott Bakula) that ADM executives, including himself, had routinely met with other companies’ representatives to fix the price of a food additive, lysine. Whitacre was the highest-ranked executive who ever informated FBI in the US history. Over several years he secretly gathered hundreds of hours of audio and videofor the FBI.

He was able to tape all the cartel’s activity as he participated at all the business meetings at various locations of the world, which were helds at such locations as Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Mexico City. Three long years Whitacre collected material to reveal the the largest price-fixing case in history at the time.
