On December 18, 2009 a musical film, Nine, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Stacy Ferguson, Sophia Loren, is released in the US theatres. Nine is directed by Rob Marshall, written by Anthony Minghella and Michael Tolkin, and produced by Rob Marshall, John DeLuca, Marc Platt, and Harvey Weinstein. The film is distributed by The Weinstein Company.

Nine’s screenplay is based on Arthur Kopit’s book for the 1982 Tony Award-winning musical of the same name, which was derived from an Italian play by Mario Fratti inspired by Federico Fellini’s autobiographical film 8½. Maury Yeston composed the music and wrote the lyrics for the songs.

Directed by Rob Marshall, Nine details the effort made by world-class filmmaker Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) in realizing his latest cinematic vision while simultaneously balancing his relationships with the many passionate and influential women in his life, including his mistress, Carla (Penélope Cruz), and wife, Luisa (Marion Cotillard).
