On August 7, 2009 the comedy-drama film, Julie & Julia, starring Meryl Streep who appears as Julia Child and Amy Adams who portrays Julie Powell, is released in United States.

Julie & Julia is directed and written by Nora Ephron and describes the life of a famous chef Julia Child. The plot of the film is based on two books and true stories: a memoir by Julie Powell and Alex Prud’s My Life in France, Child’s autobiography.

Powell started publishing her daily cooking online in August 2002. She cooked the whole set of 524 recipes from Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Later she updated that blog and reworked it into a book, Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen (published by Little, Brown, 2005).

The paperback version was named Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously (published by Back Bay Books, 2006). Ephron started filming of Julie & Julia in March 2008. It’s the first high-level film based on a person’s blog.

The first woman is frustrated secretary Julie Powell (Amy Adams), who starts a 365-day culinary quest and promise to cook all 524 recipes from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking book. She publishes her trials, findings and results of her cooking experiments in a blog that ultimately becomes very popular among the food crowd.

The other woman is Julia Child (Meryl Streep). The film tells about her and her husband Paul living in Paris in 1940-50s, when the husband was a foreign diplomat who was disclosed by Senator Joseph McCarthy for his alleged relationship with communists.
