On August 14, 2009 a science fiction film, District 9, directed by Neill Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson is released in US theaters. The story takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is based on a short film Alive in Joburg, directed by Sharlto Copley, Neill Blomkamp, Shanon Worley and Simon Hansen. The film title is influenced by a real District 6, which is situated in Cape Town. In real life the District 9 is located in what is named Katlehong, a township in Johannesburg.

Aliens made first contact with human race and Earth about 30 years ago. People expected for an attack from the alien’s part or advances in technology, but they got nothing. Those aliens were plain refugees, the last, who survived after their world was destroyed. Humans made a reservation for them in South Africa’s District 9 for better times when world leaders finally decide what to do with them.

But less and less patience remains over the situation with aliens. The whole control  over the aliens’ reservation has been contracted to the private company Multi-National United (MNU), which didn’t care about welfare of the aliens — everything they needed was new weapon.

They had to make it work but they failed each time they tried to do that, because only aliens could activate it with their own DNA. The open confrontation between the humans and the aliens takes place when Wikus van der Merwe, an MNU field operative, develops a virus which starts to change his DNA structure.

Very soon Wikus becomes the most precious and the most pursued target in the world, as he can become the key to revealing the secrets of alien military technologies. And there’s only one place where he can escape to. It’s District 9.
