On August 7, 2009 the tragicomedy film, Cold Souls, starring Dina Korzun, Paul Giamatti, David Strathairn, and Emily Watson, is shown on United States theater screens. The film is directed and written by Sophie Barthes.

Paul Giamatti plays a fictionalised version of himself: an overwhelmed and anxious New York actor who wants to and finally decides to use services of a company which claims that it can deep freeze the human soul (in the film we observe the times when souls are nothing than a commodity that can be extracted from a human body). He makes this decision after stumbling upon and reading an article about the company.

Paul’s character wants to get rid of doubt, fear worry, and other emotional burden. But this story would be nothing if something strange wouldn’t happen. Problems arises when Paul’s character’s soul gets lost in a soul trafficking system which ultimately brings his soul to St. Petersburg to a Russian soap opera actress without talent. Throughout the whole film Giamatti desperately tries to find his soul.

To get his soul back he trips to Saint Petersberg and discovers the true key to happiness, which is not the absense of pain, but the ability to feel the whole range of emotions and pay attention to things that really matter.
