On October 2, 2009 a black comedy feature film, A Serious Man, starring Richard Kind, Michael Stuhlbarg, Fred Melamed, Sari Wagner Lennick, and Aaron Wolff, is releases in the USA theatres. A Serious Man was directed, produced and written by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen.

The film is set in St. Louis Park, Minnesota in 1967, and is somehow intended to reflect the childhood of the Coen brothers as they recall it.

The main character is Larry Gopnik, a Jewish academic who lives in a middle-class Jewish neighborhood in a Minneapolis suburb. Gopnik has existential and spiritual struggle as his wife Judith leaves him for Sy Ableman, his colleague. Moreover, Larry has a brother Arthur who never has any money and cannot care for himself and consequently lives on Larry’s couch.

Larry begins to question the value and sense of his life as he deals with these and other challenges, including caring about his son, Danny, who smokes marijuana and steals money from Larry’s wallet, and his daughter Sarah, who steals his money as well to get high. There’s also a student who alternately attempts to bribe him for a passing grade and threatens to sue him for defamation. And there is a female neighbor who sunbaths in the nude and distracts Larry. Gopnik seeks advice from three different rabbis in an attempt to solve his problems and to become an austere and devoted man.
